Farewell & Thank You

When one door closes another opens….

As a group of parents, teachers and staff received the announcement of Norbel School’s unexpected closing in June 2011, the dream of creating a new school unfolded and was realized with the opening of Compass Academy in August, 2011.

In the three years since its opening, much was accomplished. Six students graduated with High School diplomas with 5 (83%) going on to 2 or 4 year college or gainful employment. An additional eight students transitioned successfully from middle to high school and are well positioned to complete that momentous milestone and many more. Over the three years, thirty-five students’ educational and social futures were shaped in a comfortable, nurturing environment with unparalleled levels of personal attention from experienced staff to help them dismantle barriers to learning, build self-esteem and bridge the gap between intellect and performance.

Whether in the classroom or out in the community Compass Academy students demonstrated responsible stewardship of the environment and served as staunch advocates for those less fortunate through participation in such worthy endeavors as Project Adventure, donating canned goods and food stuffs to local charities, providing needed supplies to the homeless, and raising almost $10,000 in funds through the Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics.

On June 13, 2014, Compass Academy ended its final year. The dream, the school, the journey could not have been possible without the dedication, commitment and generosity of our many volunteers, friends and supporters who contributed their ideas, effort, time and dollars to keep this dream alive.

We thank you for your generosity and appreciate your support.
